Access used to be mainly through the rubbish heap, sometimes only by balancing on planks. The school had set out to improve the environment by filling in the swamp, but ran out of money. Their idea was that by filling in the littered, stinking puddle, they would not only create a healthier, malaria-free environment, but also an area for the children to use as a sports field.
